Khun Phakavat's 1602
This is one of the finest looking 1602 around. After
hearing long stories on the restoration of this car from Khun Phakavat, I cay
say that he sure loves this car. More pictures and stories coming soon.
This
is updated information I received from Khun Phakavat:
My car was 1971 BMW 2002 (as
it is in the title book) but with 1.6 liter and 1602 options (Analog Clock
replace the tachometer, old steering wheel, old steering column, no center
console and no central ashtray). Real 1602 would come with shorter rear bumper,
no side rubber stripe and no rubber insert at both front and rear bumper. After searching 02 for 6 months, I
found this original Orange at BENZ TTC Klongton from BanMuang Classified. It
was in pristine condition, no rust, and no sign of collision even no ding at
all. This one owner car from new cost me 55,000 and the dealer told me that the
owner trade this car for a brand new 300E, due to limited parking space. The
day I picked up the car, I went straight to Vigrom Garage, Sukhumvit 15 for
some mechanic re-check and discussing for the restoration plan. Lift-up with
the hoist, it became obvious that this car had frame rust. Vigrom refused to
take total restoration project due to their rules at that time, but agree to
perform final re-touch and other cosmetic. So, my only choice is to find
another garage to perform the chassis build-up and body painting and gave the
rest to vigrom. Sound Easy? Four
months later, I found a garage on Bangkruai-SaiNoi Rd., who agrees to perform
the operation according to my spec. They build a fake chassis-rail and cover
them over the original chassis (the same way the dentist cover the split
teeth). So bad, it was flood heavy in this area on 95 and took me 7 months to
get the chassis done. It is also not bad because I also spend that time seeking
for the part I want. I got the part from Sri-Mitr at Worajak, Thomas Hawg at
Singapore and Jaymic from UK.
After the chassis was ready, I drove the body (not even the windshield or any
glass, only driver seat) straight to Vigrom Garage for the rest of the
jobs. They do the whole interior,
mechanic and electrical parts. I decided not to have radio and air-condition
for this car too. I believe it spend closed to 10 months before I got it
back home. I think this is
all about it.
